Leontyne Price was born in Laurel, Mississippi on February 10, 1927. “Price was renowned for her stage and TV work early into her career, but her operatic stage debut didn’t take place until September 1957, when she appeared at the San Francisco Opera. Her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City came in January 1961, when she appeared in Il Trovatore. After a brilliant performance, Price became one of the Met’s leading regular sopranos and enjoyed a celebrated career. She has since been credited as the first African-American singer to achieve an international reputation in opera.” (Source: www.biography.com)
