Judith Resnik was born in Akron, Ohio on April 5, 1949 (d. January 28, 1986). She was the second female astronaut, logging 145 hours in orbit. She graduated from Firestone High School, Akron, Ohio, in 1966; received a bachelor of science degree in Electrical Engineering from Carnegie-Mellon University in 1970, and a doctorate in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maryland in 1977. She was one of the seven crew members that died in the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger.
